  1. W: Very nice skirts. How much are they? M: Ten dollars each. And one dollar off if you may buy two. They are on sale. 2. M: I know you want to talk about this report, but I’d like to tell you about my new computer. W: Let’s keep to the point. We can talk about that later. All right? M: OK. 3. W: Oh, that’s a lovely painting in your living room. M: I’m glad you like it. It’s a Christmas gift, from my son. W: Well, it’s beautiful. Your son has a very good taste. 4. M: Cheers. W: Cheers. M: The beer tastes good. W: I am glad you like it. Would you like something to eat? M: Mm, yes, please. 5. M: Hi, I don’t think we’ve met, my name is Tom. W: Hi, Tom, nice to meet you. My name is Bonny. M: Nice to meet you, Bonny, so where are you from? W: Well, I am originally from Australia, but we moved to the United States when I was about five years old. 6-8 M: We have just moved into a house.

W: Really? Congratulations! M: Thank you, and we want to buy a new television set. W: What kind of television do you want to buy? M: A color TV set, of course, but I'm not sure about the size. Maybe we should buy a bigger one. If we buy a smaller one, we might have to change it in a few years' time for a bigger one .That would be a waste of money. What is your opinion? W: In my opinion, I don't think it's necessary to buy a very big one. M: Any reason? W: Yes. As I know, your sitting room isn't very big. If you put in a very big TV set, it will be bad for your eyes, and smaller TV set can also pick up good programmes. M: Mm, that's quite true. I'll think about it. M: You'd better make a quick decision because the price may go up soon. 9-11 W: Dad, can you lend Jenny and me some money? M: For what? W: We want to get tickets for a rock concert. We’ll pay you back out of baby-sitting. M: How much are these tickets? W: Eighteen dollars each. M: Eighteen dollars? That’s a lot of money. W: That’s not very much for this band, Dad. They are great singers, very popular. M: When will you need the money? W: Bob is also going and he’s going to town tomorrow to get the tickets. M: All right. Here’s a fifty. W: Thanks a lot, Dad. I’ll call Bob right now. 12-14 M: We had a really interesting debate in science class today.

W: Really? What was it about?

M: Space exploration. Should we continue the research or spend more money on what's important to human beings?

W: Well, I think it's important to find out about the rest of the universe, even for human beings.

M: But are we wasting money that could be spent on medical research and saving lives?

W: I see what you are saying, but we need to understand the universe and how it works.

M: But why? We live on earth. So as long as we can understand how the earth works...

W: Let me ask you something. Wouldn't you like to travel into space, or visit the moon?

M: Oh, yes, it would be wonderful!

W: Well, exactly. Maybe in the future it'll be possible to do that. M: You’re right, in science there are no boundaries to what we can do. W: So do you agree that we should go on with the research? M: Of course. You’ve changed my mind. 15 Mary and Peter were having a picnic with some friends near a river when Mary shouted, "Look! That’s a spaceship up there and it's going to land here."

Frightened by the strange spaceship, all the young people got into their cars and drove away as quickly as possible except Peter and Mary. They were more curious than frightened. They watched the spaceship land and saw a door open, but nobody came out, so they went to look into it. In the centre of the floor, there was a lot of food. Peter followed Mary into the spaceship and did not hear the door close behind him. The temperature fell in no time and very soon the two young people didn't know anything.

When they came to, they were surprised to see that they were back by the river again. The spaceship had gone. Their cat was nearby.

  "What happened?" asked Mary.

Peter scratched his head, saying slowly, “Don't ask me. Perhaps we had a dream. Come on. It's time to go home.”

After driving about fifty meters, they found a thick wall made of something like glass stood in their way. On the other side of the wall, a few strange aliens were looking through the wall and reading a notice which, translated into English. Said: “New comers at the zo a pair of earth villagers in their field with their house on wheels.”
